Documentary Film.
In the beginning of 2022, COOOP (formerly Design Partnership Australia) was invited by design colleague Deborah de Jong of Deborah De Jong Consulting to discuss the philosophy of Design-for-Behaviour with filmmaker Tanzeal Rahim from Media Collective. This design philosophy lies at the core of all their work, driving the success of venues they create. The approach, which prioritizes people first and design second, integrates behavioural science to shape environments that resonate deeply with human instincts. The result? Every space they design is a highly popular and successful venue, underpinned by an understanding of human responses and behaviours. This passion has been shared on global stages and across media outlets worldwide.
Upon hearing this philosophy, Rahim was captivated and proposed documenting the story in a film. Given that Bradley Michael, owner of Seagrass Hospitality Group, is a firm advocate for these principles in enhancing the performance of his venues, we decided to shoot the documentary at one of his establishments.
The Meat & Wine Co. Safari at 2 O’Connell Street, Sydney. From conception to completion, the film captures how Design-for-Behaviour shapes spaces that foster connection.
Our goal is for this documentary to spark a global design revolution: People first, design last. The film will be aired on television and showcased at international film festivals, bringing much-deserved global attention to the restaurant and the philosophy behind it.
Design Inspiration.
Our design draws inspiration from the Tata Somba homesteads in the Atakora Mountains of northern Benin and Togo. These traditional Boma dwellings, centered around a communal fireplace, symbolize unity, cultural continuity, and a strong sense of belonging—values that we sought to embody in our space.
Incorporating earthy tones, natural textures, and shapes inspired by African culture, the design creates an immersive environment that speaks to both cultural heritage and modern sensibilities. The inclusion of acacia trees, which form a canopy over the space, not only blends with the surroundings but also carries deep cultural and spiritual meaning, representing resilience and vitality in the African savannah.
Boma.
The Meat & Wine Co. draws from Africa's rich cultural tapestry while celebrating its Australian context. The design fuses Afro-centric elements with contemporary interiors to create a warm, inviting space unlike any other in Sydney. The design embraces the "spirit of Ubuntu"—a philosophy centred on community, sharing, and interconnectedness.
A standout feature is our modern interpretation of the traditional African Boma. Positioned strategically around the restaurant's perimeter, these Boma units serve dual purposes: they provide intimate, protected dining areas for groups, shielded from the elements and external distractions, while also focusing guests' attention towards the central fireplace and trees. This arrangement fosters social interaction and a sense of connection to the heart of the space.
The inviting atmosphere and the powerful visual elements encourage guests to linger, connect, and engage, creating a sense of community and belonging. Our aim is to provide a memorable experience that leaves a lasting impression, encouraging guests to return and share their positive experiences with others.
