Calvin Janse van Vuuren

Calvin Janse van Vuuren is a hospitality-focused interior designer and co-founder of COOOP, with more than a decade of experience designing restaurants, cafés, and commercial environments that are deeply rooted in human behaviour, cultural context, and environmental responsibility.

Trained in architectural thinking and shaped by hands-on hospitality experience, Calvin’s approach to design begins long before form-making. He believes that design is not the solution itself, but the result of asking better questions. Influenced by Einstein’s belief that understanding the problem is the most critical part of any solution, Calvin spends time observing from both within and without acknowledging that no single lens captures the full picture.

As an observer, Calvin draws insight from diverse cultures, communities, and environments, recognising that perspective is expanded through immersion. As a creator, he is driven by a deep curiosity to resolve complex challenges in ways that are both innovative and conscious. And as a designer, his passion lies in understanding how spaces influence human behaviour emotionally, socially, and environmentally so that each project contributes to a more considered future.

Calvin openly acknowledges that background, experience, and personal bias shape how designers interpret the world. Rather than seeing this as a limitation, he treats it as a responsibility. His most successful work emerges when those blind spots are challenged through collaboration, listening, and meaningful engagement with the people who will ultimately inhabit the space. By widening the lens, each project becomes a reflection of its unique context designed not just for clients, but for communities.

Through COOOP and his work in Envirohacking, Calvin continues to explore how design can move beyond aesthetics to become a tool for positive behavioural and environmental impact. His spaces are known for their layered storytelling, material sensitivity, and ability to provide moments of calm and connection within the intensity of modern hospitality environments.
